Preventing, Assessing, and Intervening in Teenage Dating Abuse - A Training for Specialized Instructional Support Personnel

Overview

This training toolkit addresses teenage dating abuse.  Specifically, it is designed for trainers to assist specialized instructional support personnel (e.g., school psychologists, social workers, school nurses, guidance counselors) in identifying, assessing, effectively intervening in, and preventing teenage dating abuse.

The toolkit explores characteristics of both healthy and unhealthy dating relationships, provides strategies for assessing whether dating abuse is occurring and how to intervene when required, provides guidance on norms and policies schools may employ, and provides extensive resources to key support staff in addressing dating abuse. The workshop in which the information is shared is highly participatory and draws from the experience and knowledge of participants. A comprehensive Trainer's Guide and engaging PowerPoint slides and handouts are provided for those leading the session.

This resource was developed under funding from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Safe and Healthy Students (OSHS) by the National Center on Safe Supportive Learning Environments. The following organizations provided input and guidance to the creation of this Toolkit: American School Counselor Association, Boston Public Health Commission, Futures Without Violence, Idaho Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence, National Association of School Nurses, National Association of School Psychologists, National Domestic Violence Hotline, and Start Strong Austin.

Participant Objectives

Participants in the training will:

  • Identify the characteristics of healthy relationships.
  • Identify the characteristics of teenage dating abuse.
  • Provide strategies for how to assess the extent to which students are placed at risk, intervene with students at risk, and help prevent dating abuse in the school communities.
  • Explain how to help establish appropriate policies to address teenage dating abuse.
  • Explain how to extend positive norms throughout school communities.
  • Identify resources in school communities to address teenage dating abuse.
  • Identify groups in school communities that require special attention.
