The long-term consequence of this epidemic is as yet unknown. What we do know is that early, regular exposure to high-dose, inhaled nicotine results in long-term disruption of the brain’s limbic system and its control of emotions, behaviors and impulse.
Adolescents who vape are also four times more likely to try regular combustible cigarettes. Youth friendly flavors play a major role in initiation to vaping as does the addition of benzoic acid to the nicotine molecule making it more palatable to young throats and enabling higher nicotine dosing. Both JUUL and Puff Bar have utilized these technologies in seductive product development, accompanied by predatory marketing practices. There are no effective evidence-based treatments for adolescent nicotine addiction, but there are several on-line support and advice systems that are in trial. The most effective preventive and motivational efforts have been hard-hitting and innovative counter-marketing campaigns and legislative actions to restrict flavors and sales to young people.
