The U.S. Department of Education, Office of Elementary and Secondary Education’s Office of Safe and Supportive Schools, the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), and the National Center on Safe Supportive Learning Environments (NCSSLE) invite you to join our next webinar: Understanding Access and Promoting Safety: Youth and Online Drugs.
There is growing concern about the impact of digital media, particularly social media, on youth; in fact, the U.S. Surgeon General posted an advisory calling attention to the “growing concerns about the effects of social media on youth mental health.” In recognition of Drug and Alcohol Facts week, we partnered with the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) on this webinar to help practitioners understand how counterfeit medications and illicit substances are made available online and shipped directly to people in their homes. Presenters discussed how the marketing of drugs, both for therapeutic use and recreational use, has shifted over time and how current messaging tactics may lead students to believe that their usage is both a social norm and safe. Our panelists provided information on how they are directly working with the Drug Enforcement Administration and others to address drug access and discuss what adults can do to support safer online access for students through digital wellness approaches.
