NYPD planning to hire 475 more school safety agents despite hiring freeze, promises of transfer

Mayor Bill de Blasio and Speaker Corey Johnson said during last year's budget negotiations that a so-called $1 billion cut to the NYPD budget would be achieved in part through transferring school safety agents out of the police department.

More than seven months later, the transfer hasn't happened and a Department of Education official said Thursday the NYPD has been discussing hiring two new classes of nearly 475 school safety agents in March and June — to the tune of $20 million.
