Since 2018, Texas businesses were cited over 4,700 times for violations related to underage drinking, according to Texas Alcohol and Beverage Commission data. As a part of the analysis, the Chronicle also analyzed the frequency of these repeat violations in proximity to colleges and universities. Bars and establishments around South Texas College in McAllen are the worst offenders for repeatedly serving minors. TABC cited 18 businesses within 2 miles of the school 69 times since 2018. Vibe Club, a night club in McAllen, has been cited 11 times since 2018 for underage drinking violations, the most violations for any business in Texas. Two other top offenders were bars in College Station, home to Texas A&M University and its large student population. The Chronicle’s analysis also found that TABC’s underage drinking citations typically increase in August and March each year, coinciding with the start of the academic year and spring break for most colleges.
