The U.S. Department of Education, Office of Elementary and Secondary Education’s Office of Safe and Supportive Schools, the Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools (REMS) Technical Assistance (TA) Center, and the National Center on Safe Supportive Learning Environments (NCSSLE) invite you to join the Preventing and Addressing School Violence including Gun Violence Miniseries as part of the Lessons from the Field Webinar Series.
Keeping students safe from gun violence in their school communities is a top priority. There have been an estimated 394 school shootings that exposed more that 360,000 students to gun violence since the mass shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado in 1999. The Biden-Harris Administration is taking significant action to prevent and address gun violence through enacting the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BCSA), creating the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, coordinating with federal agencies like the U.S. Department of Education, and more. The strategy to support school safety and keep firearms out of schools includes (1) stopping people in crisis and juveniles from accessing firearms, (2) implementing evidence-based school-based preventative solutions, and (3) addressing the mental health needs of students, particularly those impacted by gun violence.
The Preventing and Addressing School Violence including Gun Violence Miniseries offers webinars focused on evidence-based practices to prevent and address gun violence in school communities. The series provides strategies to implement at key stages to support schools in providing support and utilizing systems to prevent violence incidents; embedding comprehensive gun violence prevention into emergency operations plans; responding to violent incidents and implementing interventions; and supporting students and staff in recovery after a violent incident.
