One evening in mid-October, Leslie Montgomery said her daughter received a barrage of emails to her school email account. Montgomery said her daughter— a seventh grader at the Christian private school Greenleaf Friends Academy — had been the subject of bullying by fellow students since enrolling in the school last year.

Idaho high school students reported less bullying, cigarette smoking and sexual activity in the State Department of Education’s biannual youth risk behavior survey. But teens reported increased e-cigarette use, feelings of hopelessness and suicidal thoughts.

About 2.5 million children in the U.S. currently are homeless, according to the National Center on Family Homelessness. That number is rising as house prices and rental costs continue to grow in cities large and small, and the trend is clearly visible in Boise — the fastest-growing city in the nation.

We’re heading into a third school year marked by the pandemic.  This back-to-school season, thousands of Washington children will ride school buses, find their desks and sit down for lunch with peers. In-person learning will be ubiquitous again, even if being fully vaccinated isn’t: Only 40% of Washington 12- to 15-year-olds are vaccinated — and so are 47% of 16- and 17-year-olds. A vaccine for young children isn’t expected until midwinter. 

TACOMA, Wash. - Parents in Tacoma are organizing a petition to raise concerns about COVID safety at school.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Tonight, Spokane Public Schools held a meeting to look at the district's campus safety. This comes after Spokane Police Chief Craig Meidl sent a letter to SPS's superintendent last week after claiming a "pattern of assaults and threats not being reported by police."
