A shooting on a college campus is a worst-case scenario, but universities across the state remain prepared and ready to act. 

Dr. Josette Cline, the director of the Counseling and Psychological Services center at the University of Arkansas, said mental health is a top priority for the University, especially in a year plagued by the pandemic. Dr. Cline said the number of calls to CAPS has increased after a University of Arkansas student died in his fraternity house last weekend.

Applying to college has always been harder for first-generation and low-income students than for peers with greater access to support at every step of the process. This year, data shows, that gulf has widened.  

The Connecticut State Colleges and Universities system is expanding its mental health options for its community college students.

In 2020, a staggering 39 million American adults dropped out of college and never finished their degrees. Their reasons vary and so do the solutions. Colleges and philanthropies are interested in luring this population back—not only to improve the lives of these individuals and raise the skills of the U.S. labor force, but also to fill empty seats at colleges that have been losing students.

A recent survey conducted by the University of Michigan found that more than 60% of college students “met criteria for one or more mental health problems.” This is a whopping 50% increase in less than a decade.

Reports of sexual violence on Connecticut’s college campuses rose nearly 40% last year, marking an approximate return to pre-pandemic levels of sexual assault, stalking and intimate partner violence.
