The incarcerated men in this classroom are painters and physics nerds, deep thinkers, and fast readers. They come from five different gangs; they are white, Native American, Black, and Latino. They are also college juniors and seniors who gather several times a week to take classes from Pitzer College, a small, elite liberal arts school of about 1,000 students located an hour away from the California Rehabilitation Center.

Detroit school district officials are planning more aggressive steps to reverse a rise in chronic absenteeism, a huge obstacle to their efforts to help students recover academically from the impact of the pandemic.

Austin LeMay, the campus culture director at Tenaya Middle School in Fresno, California, ensures morale is high by connecting the school community and hosting Friday dance parties during the lunch period.

A pilot program from the California Community College system helps homeless students find and pay for housing. College of the Redwoods is one of 14 campuses that provides this assistance to students who need help with housing. A 2019 survey of community college students found that 60% of participants had been housing insecure in the past year and 19% had been homeless. A full half of those surveyed had been food insecure in the past month. 

Two community colleges in cities with very high housing costs have found a way to provide housing for homeless students. Among the lessons they learned is that providing housing is only a start for traumatized students who have been homeless, many of them formerly incarcerated.
