Muriel Sarmiento was brought to the United States as a teenager with her immigrant family from Venezuela. She struggled in high school as she grappled with a new language and culture, keeping to herself because she was afraid of others making fun of her heavy accent. Her school experience in the U.S. changed dramatically when she enrolled in Miami Dade College’s dual-language program, one of the few of its kind in the nation.

In the era of mass shootings and bills being passed allowing guns to be carried without permits, one starts to wonder if we are actually safe on college campuses, more importantly, Historically Black Colleges and Universities. With Florida House Bill 543 being passed on Monday, this now means that a person who carries a concealed weapon does not need a permit to carry and must show identification to law enforcement if asked.

Since 2019, Ignacio House has housed 15 “resident scholars” who study at N.Y. colleges and universities at a site in the Bronx. Last month, the community received permission from the Archdiocese of New York to move into its new home at the site of a one-time residence of the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers in Manhattan.

In addition to pet therapy and meditation, Syracuse University students seeking mental health support can now work with a faith keeper of the Oneida Nation. 

As of fall 2022, Stony Brook is one of 33 higher ed institutions where students can apply for money through a local FAST Fund to help cover an education expense or address a basic life need.

The U.S. Department of Education announced new partnerships with Carnegie Corporation and Overdeck Family Foundation to launch the Family Engagement Learning Series on February 28, 2023, which is intended to boost family engagement and lift parent voices.
