More than half a dozen Maine schools have dealt with a spate of threats in the last two weeks — leading some to call off classes for the day. It's a trend that's expected to continue.

Maine has not seen reporting of school shootings, but the fear around gun violence in the classroom has many parents and guardians in the state on edge.

Almost three decades ago, the College banned fraternities from campus, transforming social life at Bowdoin and creating the College House System. One major reason for the ban, as cited by the commission that recommended fraternity abolition, was a toxic drinking culture associated with settings outside the College’s control.

Several University of Oklahoma students are concerned for their safety in Norman and on campus in light of recent tragic events in other college towns such as the 2023 Michigan State University shooting and the 2022 Idaho murders.

Spradling, OSU’s director of parking and transportation, was asked to lead the Pedestrian Safety Task Force in July after the previous head, Joe Weaver, retired. In addition to Spradling, representatives from facilities management, OSU Police and OSU’s Brand Management are part of the task force. In April, the task force announced a reduction in speed limit to 20 mph on Monroe Street, where the hit-and-run occurred, along with a four-way stop.
